What is GRE?
The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools. It is owned and administered by Educational Testing Service and was established in 1936 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Who takes the GRE?
It is taken by over 500,000 test-takers annually, for admissions to many Graduate Schools and a growing number of Business Schools.

What is the structure of the GRE?
It consists of three skill areas of Quantitative reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.
There is also an experimental section that can either be verbal or quantitative; sometimes an identified research section is given at the end of the test instead. It does not count towards the test takers scores. However, the paper based GRE does not provide this section.
GRE has an allotted time of approximately 3 hours 45 minutes (approximately 90 seconds per question)

How much does it cost to take the GRE?
There is a limited amount of GRE fee waivers are available for college seniors and students not enrolled in school who meet the eligibility requirements.

When is the GRE conducted and how many times can the GRE be taken?
The computer based GRE is available multiple times a year, dependent on the availability of the test center. Whereas, the paper based test is offered three times a year in February, October and November. The GRE can be taken once every 21 days and up to 5 times in a 12-month period, this is applicable even if you have canceled scores for previously taken tests. For the paper-based GRE, the test taker can take the test as often as it is offered. Great news is colleges only see the selected scores the tester makes available to them.

Where can a student take the GRE?
The GRE is administered at Prometric test center and also on specific dates at additional testing locations. Appointments are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. Test Centers can be found via ets.org/gre via the “Test Centers and Dates”, follow link to search for GRE Test Centers, dates and seat availability.

What is considered a good score on the GRE?
While the highest score that can be earned is 340 on the GRE, the most recent average score has been 304.

What is considered a good score on the GRE?
The official GRE test scores are typically viewable to you online and sent to your selected institutions about 15 days after your test. Also test scores are valid for a 5 year period.

Are GRE scores automatically sent to colleges?
The schools the tester selected on the test day will be automatically sent the results from the tester’s GRE scores free of charge.

Are there any prerequisites for the GRE?
There are not any official prerequisites for the GRE, however, the GRE is intended for bachelor degree graduates and undergraduates who are about to graduate. Fluency in English assumed.

How long before the GRE should I study?
It is recommended that GRE test takers study for at least 3 months prior to the intended test date.

When is the next available GRE test date?
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the GRE test dates are constantly shifting. Test takers will have to schedule test and pay fee via the online portal.

What happens if I have to reschedule my GRE?
It will cost a student $50 to reschedule the GRE, as long as the student cancels at least four days before the scheduled test or the test will be forfeited.

How do I register for the GRE?
Registration can be done online via www.ets.org/gre. Or by phone 1-800-GRE-CALL or by mail. Testers can register anywhere between 3 to 4 months before the test date.

What to expect on the day of the GRE?
On the day of testing, the test taker must have a valid GRE approved photo ID, the appointment confirmation email or authorization voucher and water. Testers may also bring along a light sweater or jacket. Electronics are strictly prohibited in the test center. There is a 10 minute optional break after the third section and one minute breaks between the remaining sections of the test, Testers are not allowed to leave the test center building unless it is for restroom use.

Both, GRE and GMAT, are required as a part of admissions to the graduate schools. Furthermore, the number of business schools have started accepting GRE scores lately. On the other hand, GMAT score is required for admissions to most business schools.
